If we got him a little pet he would squish it, toss it, flush is, and who knows what else with it not to mention what WE would have to do to keep the poor thing alive PLUS expenses and cleaning.

These battery operated hamsters are "like real" to little ones. Each hamster make it's own sounds, move around on their own, and even has a little personality. They have a "fun house" and tons of really fun add ons like a hamster wheel, sleep dome, ramp, even a car, and a separate hamster ball so they can run around like real hamsters on your floor!
Our Experience:
Zhu Zhu Pets are recommended for ages for and up but my 2 year old son LOVED them as well as my friends 7 year old daughter and 5 year old son. They are such a blast, I've even been known to play with them...seriously!
Putting the set together can be quite a job (just a warning) but once it's done it's so fun. Also, the little guys get stuck in the wheel sometimes or in tunnels or tip over but if your children are actively playing with them it shouldn't be a problem.
One problem we ran into was once the little guys were places on the carpet the wheels picked up some carpet and the hamsters I had to clean the wheels and dig out the carpet parts for them to work again. So DON'T PUT THEM ON CARPET! :)
We love them! There's no doubt that these are going to be a HOT Christmas item!
